Birding Product Reviews from a crazy bird lady!

Feeding our fine-feathered friends!
Read the blog on what birds like what kinds of foods if you are interested in attracting certain types of birds. I will be posting the brands/types that I have had success with here.
Ratings go 1 :(…………….5 :)!

Lyric makes a great shelled peanuts product that will attract all kind of nut-lovers. The Tufted Titmouse, Black-capped Chickadees, Red and White-breasted Nuthatches, all woodpeckers and Bluejays are fans. My Cardinals will also splurge once in a while. Note-squirrels are also fans….so…..

Rating-5! #Lyric

Lyric also makes a Finch Small Songbird mix that I call fancy finch food in my feeding birds blog. If you are looking to see the colors and hear the songs of Goldfinches, Purple and House Finches, get this food! My Chickadees, Juncos and House Sparrows also like it. If you do not use a special Nyjer feeder, Mourning Doves and Cardinals will also stop by for a bite.

Goldfinches love Lyric Finch Small Songbird Mix!

How about bird feeders?

This Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone Wild Bird Feeder did not fare so well. You can get it online for about $22.00-I paid more at my local store. It lasted 4 days before my squirrels broke the springs on the side so that the birds cannot access the nuts inside now. I bought one before that did last longer but too risky.
Not Really Rating-2

Squirrel Proof Feeder. Seems like the maker is Woodlink and their feeders are marketed by other companies? This feeder and other similar models are not safe because the birds can fit their heads into the food ports and GET STUCK. I had an American Goldfinch who had his head stuck and was frantically trying to free himself. Thankfully, I was home. I had set my camera near the feeder to tape the birds enjoying their new feeder. I went back inside to do some things and let the birds find the feeder. When I came back out to collect my camera, I found the poor goldfinch just laying still inside the feeder and went to investigate. I tried to free it and then started to panic a bit when I couldn’t. Then, I ran for a screwdriver to try and take the feeder apart. I couldn’t get it apart and the bird was even more stressed when I tried to do this. I was afraid he was going to break his neck in his efforts to free himself and he was clearly exhausted. I ran and got my dad. I held the feeder open and moved all the food out of the way. I held it still so my dad could go inside the feeder and gently maneuver the head to be able to push the goldfinch backwards to free him. I am not sure how long he was struggling when I found him as I had been inside for about 15 minutes. But, my 8 minutes of trying to help him seemed like an eternity. He flew off and I hope he is still fine. I realized later that I had never shut moved my camera so I had footage of this awful scene. It wasn’t the best quality video but I shared it to my social media pages to warn people about the feeder. A follower shared that she had a Tufted Titmouse stuck in this model as well. I thought the Audubon name would mean that the feeder was safe. This feeder was quite expensive too. There are many feeders like this under different name brands so we need to get the word out. Please help share this information. The video is very hard to watch but you can see it on my Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube sites. Please share there too. Rating-NO WAY0
